At Vacamas, we believe that every child deserves the chance to grow up to reach his or her potential. In the impoverished urban communities we serve, very few have that opportunity. Our customizable programs provide the critical support that is lacking in their homes, schools, and communities to help children improve academic achievement and develop the confidence, leadership and communication skills that will enable them to break the cycle of poverty.
- Keeping them safe during the critical after-school hours by providing responsible supervision in a structured environment
- Improving academic performance, and providing the support they need to stay in school
- Preparing them to achieve high school graduation and college placement
- Engaging families and the community with the goal of improving support mechanisms available to our participants
The Vacamas GLOW Model: A Chance to Shine
The many crippling obstacles faced by disadvantaged children include a lack of opportunities for them to explore their own talents and potential, as well as a lack of motivation to work toward academic achievement. Their world is limited to poverty and crime on the city streets. Vacamas gives them the opportunity to see what the world has to offer them, and to discover their own unique gifts.
Our GLOW programs provide a safe and nurturing place to go every day after school and give students the personal and academic support they need to build resilience and stay in school. GLOW empowers young people to “Gain Life’s Other Ways”- way that are not always accessible to them.
Vacamas GLOW provides extended experiential learning that not only helps students to catch up academically, but also to gain self-confidence, motivation, and the ability to make good decisions. We feed them healthy, nutritious food to sustain their bodies and minds. They discover who they are and what they can accomplish, and they develop the skills needed to reach their goals and ultimately to break the cycle of poverty.
